Cake decorating class a big hit with these children Share
What could be more fun for a group of girls than spending the afternoon with a group of friends and learning to decorate cakes at the same time? That's exactly the scenario that played out recently at Sharon's Custom Design Cakes in Crete. During a day off from school, a group of girls, ranging in age from 6-10, gathered to learn the art of cake decorating and enjoy the camaraderie at the same time. The girls decorated a dozen cupcakes, learned to use their own personal cake decorating kit and made a mini-pizza cake. Owner Sharon Komes said she had worked with groups of Girl Scouts in the past on cake decorating and been asked to offer classes for the younger set. Six girls registered and attended this first class on a recent Monday afternoon. In all, the girls each decorated a dozen cupcakes. Komes was impressed that those with brothers made sure that they chose a few toppings, like baseball and football rings, for their brothers. Other cupcake toppings included butterflies, ducks and Easter Eggs.

Reily Opilka, 10, lives in Sauk Village now, but misses her friend, Julia Rivero, 10, of Crete. It was the perfect opportunity for the girls to spend time together, doing something that they both enjoy. In fact, when Reily lived in Crete, she was a regular visitor to the cake decorating business. She'd visited with a neighbor and would always stop by the shop after school. Komes said Reily was one of her best helpers. Working hard to put miniature rose buds on her cupcake, Ashley Haton, 9, of Crete said, ''I like making the rose buds. I've never done cake decorating before.'' Of course, all the girls seemed to enjoy the frosting tacos they ate before making their mini-pizza cake. Komes cut the rounded tops off of each cake, allowed the girls to fill it with frosting and then folded it into a taco. The girls then placed the cut side down on their decorating trays to ensure a flat surface for their project. Komes showed the girls the way she combined brown and yellow food coloring in the frosting to make the crust. A light yellow was used for the cheese and then the girls smoothed little dots of red to make pepperonis. The last topping was green peppers and mushrooms, using frosting of green and light brown to make these final additions to the mini-pizza cakes. For those interested in signing up their children up for cake decorating classes, Komes will be offering additional classes on Saturday, February 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Monday, February 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. for those 6 to 17 years old. She also is offering a Mom and Me class for three to five-year-olds on February 24, from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost of the class is $35, which includes a cake decorating kit for each of the youngsters, instructions on using the kit and decorating a dozen cupcakes and a mini-pizza kit..
