Hickory Creek watershed draws support Share
New Lenox Village officials have thrown their support behind the Hickory Creek Watershed Planning Group's initiative for development of plans for improvements to the Hickory Creek watershed. The New Lenox Board of Trustees last week adopted a resolution to endorse the efforts of the HCWPG, an 11-member coalition of municipalities, county agencies, environmental advocacy groups and other interested organizations. The HCWPG is looking to inventory watershed resources and to create a watershed plan that will ultimately lead to improved water quality and reduced erosion. At the same time, the group will develop an executive summary, an educational brochure, a watershed restoration workshop and a Web site. The HCWPG was organized in 2008 to support the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's efforts for watershed improvements. The CMAP has been awarded some $209,520 in federal stimulus funds from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency via the Clean Water Act under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. To help meet the requirements of the CMAP and JEPA joint financial assistance agreement, the 11 members of the HCWPG are offering support and funding with in-kind services.

The resolution approved by the board of trustees notes that New Lenox is a member of the HCWPG and supports CMAP's efforts for watershed improvements. In other business, meanwhile, the New Lenox board last week also approved a request from the New Lenox Community Park District to display signs announcing the Proud American Days Community Fair. The event will be held from July 23 through July 26. Signs will be posted from July 6 through July 27 at intersections of Vine Street, Cedar Road, Parker Road, Haven Avenue, Nelson Road, Retail Drive, the Metra Train Station, Illinois Highway, Gougar Road and Schoolhouse Road. The park district also asked the village for permission to use the fire hydrant at the Commons for water access throughout the festival, and that the village spray for mosquitoes on Wednesday, July 22, at the festival site. In addition, the village agreed to run its street sweeper through the Lions Community Center parking lot after the event. Also at the June 8 meeting, the village board: -Adopted an ordinance renaming Clinton Street ''Silver Cross Boulevard'' between U.S. Route 6 and Francis Road. The name change, which takes effect 30 days after board action, reflects the village's pride in being the location for the new Silver Cross Medical Center and the coveted $400 million, 600,000-square-foot Silver Cross replacement hospital, slated to open there in 2012. -Reviewed a request from Linda Lopez, executive director for the Lincoln-Way High School Foundation for Educational Excellence, for signs advertising the foundation's annual house raffle. Because the raffle is one of the Foundation's biggest money-makers, Lopez asked the village to allow placement of two or three temporary, professionally designed and created signs at various locations in the village. Other communities also have agreed to allow similar signs to be posted. The signs, she noted, will help to ''raise awareness and promote the campaign'' for the house giveaway. Tickets are $100 each; information is available at www.lw210.org. Purchase deadline is October 4. -Agreed to allow placement of signs announcing the time and locations of upcoming July 4 activities. Signs will be posted this week at eight locations. Information about the July 4 special events also will be displayed on the message center in front of the village hall. The Independence Day celebration will include children's activities, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Commons on Veterans Parkway. A pop music concert will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the Lions Club Raffle drawing at 8:30 p.m. and a concert of patriotic music. The evening will conclude at 9:30 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks display. Russell Publications prints several community newspapers each week, serving Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.
