Pink benefit at Oster-Oakview

Twenty students from New Lenox's Oster-Oakview School are sporting neon pink hair clips this month, but not just to be trendy.

The girls, all members of the sixth grade basketball team at the school, are helping to raise funds for the Cancer Support Center of Mokena, as well as to increase breast cancer awareness.

The brightly colored hair extensions are available at JCPenney Hair Salon on Wolf Road at U.S. Route 30 in Mokena for $5 during the month of October. Proceeds benefit the Cancer Support Center, 19250 Everett Lane in Mokena.

The Center provides free support services for cancer patients, as well as their families and friends. The free services are available to any cancer patient from any community, and many come from as far away as Peotone or Joliet.

The pink hair clips, meanwhile, are the Oster-Oakview team's way of showing support for women everywhere who are battling breast cancer.

Jenn Adams, a friend of Cancer Support Center Spokesperson Kathy Kahlhammer and volunteer at the Center, said her sister organized the basketball team's participation in the fundraiser.

''JCPenney in Mokena decided to do this for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and graciously offered to donate the money to the Cancer Support Center of Mokena,'' Adams said.

''My sister, Melanie Berwanger, is one of the coaches of the girls' basketball team. When she learned what JCPenney was doing, she presented the idea to the other coach, Lindsay Lowell, and together they thought it would be a great way for the girls to do something for the community.

''In addition, they hoped it would bring awareness to the community about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

''They are going to ''Play for Pink.'' By going pink, they will help bring awareness to our community. At the same time, they will help raise money for a local organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our neighbors affected by cancer.

''They presented the idea to the girls, and they were all for it!''

The team took a bus to the JCPenney Hair Salon after school, where the staff was ready with the pink hair clips, as well as free pink cupcakes.

Kathy Kahlhammer, meanwhile, said she is very grateful for both the JCPenney Salon's support, and the enthusiastic endorsement from the Oster-Oakview girls basketball team.

The Cancer Support Center provides individual counseling for all ages, as well as family and couples counseling. In addition, there are weekly support groups for cancer patients, caregiver support groups and children/teens groups. The Center also offers numerous wellness programs, including yoga, mindfulness meditation, therapeutic touch (massage, healing touch and Reiki therapy) and more.

More information about the Cancer Support Center is available at 708-478-3529, or visit www.CancerSupportCenter.org.
