The Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 marching bands represented their schools well this past weekend at the State of Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship at Illinois State University.

Lincoln-Way North Marching Phoenix placed fifth in the state; Lincoln-Way East Marching Griffins placed sixth; and the Lincoln-Way Central Marching Knights placed ninth.

Lincoln-Way West Marching Warriors, which just formed this year with the opening of the new school, won a citation for Best Crowd Appeal in the Class 2A preliminary competition.

''These results are about a story of hard work, commitment, unwavering support and the will to never give up,'' said Bert Johnson, chairman of the music department at Lincoln-Way North High School. ''What the Marching Phoenix accomplished this weekend will be remembered indefinitely.''

''Our kids had a phenomenal week of rehearsals and finished the season with their two best performances of the year,'' said Marching Knights director Eric Wellman. ''I am extremely proud of how they persevered through the bad weather this week, and I am so pleased to see them give two great performances in one day.''

The Marching Phoenix, who are celebrating their second year of existence, have had a remarkable season. They've been undefeatable in Illinois in class competition all season.

Saturday was no different. The band finished first in the Class 4A division.

The Marching Knights placed fourth in their class (Class 6A), while the Marching Griffins finished second in their's (Class 5A). The Marching Warriors placed second in Class 2A.

''The Marching Warriors had a great performance to end an outstanding season,'' said Steve Nedzel, the music department chairman at West. ''The band had a highly successful and fun year and will build on it next year with all the new people that will be joining the band. The students have worked extremely hard this year and put forth a great show and name for the band and school in our first year.''

''I am incredibly proud of our kids and am glad their efforts are being recognized with positive feedback,'' said Clif Smith, the music department chairman at East. ''We have a wonderful support group of parents, and none of this would be possible without that support.''

More than 40 bands competed at the State of Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship. The top three finishers were Marian Catholic, Lake Park and Prospect high schools.

Russell Publications prints several community newspapers each week, serving Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.
