Boy dies as a result of dog bites

JOHNSTON CITY - A three-year-old Johnston City boy has died as the result of multiple dog bites.

At 8:03 p.m. Saturday evening, the Williamson County Sheriff's Dept. responded to a 911 call reporting a child that wasn't breathing. CPR was being conducted on the child, the caller said.

Upon arriving, county deputies and EMTs discovered that Gabriel Mandrell, 3, had been attacked by at least one of the family dogs. The child was taken by ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.

Investigators say it appears the child had been asleep when family members checked at 7:30 p.m., but apparently later awoke and pushed out the screen in a bedroom window. He crawled out the window and was, at some point, attacked about 200 feet from the residence. Family members discovered him missing at 8 p.m.

The family's three outside dogs - two Pit Bull mixes and a Collie mix - were running loose. The dogs were removed from the scene by Williamson County Animal Control, which will house the dogs until the investigation is complete and a determination can be made concerning their fate.

An Evansville, Ind., pathologist conducted an autopsy late Sunday afternoon at the Williamson County Morgue. It was determined the child died as the result of blood loss from multiple dog bites.

The pathologist has ruled the death an accident.

Man crashes into telephone pole after hood becomes unlatched

SPRINGFIELD - An 18-year-old Carlinville man drove a Honda Accord into a telephone pole after the car's hood became unlatched and broke the windshield Saturday.

Rhett W. Pettit was cited for a vehicle equipment violation and operating an uninsured vehicle, police said. The crash occurred about 6 p.m.

Pettit was southbound on Chatham Road when the vehicle's hood became unhinged, broke the windshield and obstructed Pettit's view of the road, police said. The car veered to the right and hit a telephone pole.

Pettit was treated and released at St. John's Hospital for chest and back pain.

Officers found bungee cords in the vehicle's front grill. Police said they may have been used to hold the hood down before the accident.

Former Schock opponent named Illinois director of rural development

PEORIA - President Barack Obama has officially named Colleen Callahan Burns as the state's director of rural development.

The appointment does not require Senate confirmation. She will assume her new duties in early July.

Rural Development provides financial assistance through guaranteed loans, direct loans and some grant funds to individuals, public bodies, nonprofits, Native American tribes, and cooperatives in rural areas.

State directors provide mission area wide leadership at the state level to the network of nearly 500 field offices in USDA Service Centers and coordinate with many local, regional, state and other federal agencies and groups to help provide a starting point to address business, community or housing needs.

Callahan, a Democrat, lost the November general election to Republican Aaron Schock. She said her experience as a congressional candidate helped her recognize the needs of individuals throughout the state.
